Leader Arjin and the Principle of Leadership in YPJ

The resistance of the fighters and the people in northern and eastern Syria has left a historical mark in the journey of achieving freedom for peoples. The rightful struggle of our people, led by the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), has delivered decisive blows to the fascist Turkish state and its affiliated mercenaries. The Turkish state utilizes all its military capabilities, alongside paramilitary groups and mercenaries, to attempt to occupy our regions. However, in the battles of Tishrin Dam and Qara Qozak Bridge, all Turkish occupation attempts were thwarted.

In this historic resistance, acts of bravery and self-sacrifice stand as guarantees for the freedom of our people. Leader Arjin Kobani, with unwavering faith and determination, gave no opportunity to aggression during the Battle of Tishrin Dam and the ambitions of neo-Ottomanism. She clearly demonstrated how the Women’s Protection Units confront occupying forces.

Our leader and comrade, Adla Mukhari, known as Arjin Kobani, was born in the city of resistance, Kobani, in 1984. She grew up in a patriotic family raised on the culture of loving and defending the homeland, which requires us to carry out our duties with great courage and loyalty. With this foundation, awareness, and deep faith, Leader Arjin decided in 2001 to join the ranks of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement. She headed to the mountains of Kurdistan, the haven of free women. Until 2011, she fought in the mountains of Kurdistan and played a significant role in the struggle. She participated in revolutions aimed at liberating the homeland and achieving women’s freedom, becoming a revolutionary woman who carried vast experiences of resistance.

In 2011, with the outbreak of the internal war in Syria—a pivotal moment for our people—Leader Arjin decided to become part of the revolution in Rojava, which was moving toward freedom and independence. She went to Western Kurdistan and left her first mark in youth organization by initiating large-scale activities in several cities of Rojava to raise youth awareness and engage them in various activities. With the start of the revolution, she played a prominent role in political orientation and the organization of women and society in multiple cities, executing important and strategic projects.

In her struggle for the women’s revolution, Leader Arjin was a great role model. She always worked with knowledge and confidence to serve the revolution, without distinguishing between leadership responsibilities.

Through her experiences and sacrifices, Leader Arjin became an important symbol and an example of liberation leadership in the Women’s Protection Units. In her dedicated and tireless efforts, she represented the qualities of a devoted leader. She trained numerous fighters on the principles and philosophy of women’s and peoples’ freedom and joined the frontlines with her comrades. During the Battle of Tishrin Dam, she firmly believed that the spirit of resistance in Kobani could achieve victory over fascism. Leader Arjin embodied the essence of true leadership in every stage of the struggle.

On January 21, Leader Arjin stood on the frontlines at Tishrin Dam against the Turkish occupation until the very end, where she displayed extraordinary resistance and a decisive vision for victory. In that battle, Leader Arjin became a symbol of resistance and women’s heroism, joining the ranks of the martyrs with unmatched courage.

At the outset, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Leader Arjin, and we send our greetings and sympathies to our patriotic people across Rojava. As the “Women’s Protection Units,” we affirm our continued struggle along the path of Leader Arjin. Today, we work to achieve victory at Tishrin Dam and Qara Qozak, hoping this leads to success in the revolution for freedom.
