Miletan Afrin, one of the commanders of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), reflected on the fifteen-year journey of struggle and resistance undertaken by the Units, stating:
“The establishment of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) was rooted in a profound historical legacy. The structure and organization of the Units are built upon solid foundations. Women cannot live without protection, and true protection for women lies in their own strength, unity, and identity. A woman’s ability to defend herself is her genuine guarantee of freedom and security.”
As part of her assessment, Miletan Afrin addressed the sacrifices made by women, adding:
“The sacrifices made by women cannot be regarded as ordinary or insignificant. The system imposed upon us is fundamentally authoritarian in nature. Throughout these fifteen years, the Women’s Protection Units have succeeded in organizing their ranks and continuously developing and expanding their structure day after day.”
Miletan Afrin also highlighted the achievements accomplished by the Units, saying:
“We have achieved many gains throughout this period. These achievements have not been limited to Rojava (North and East Syria) alone, but have extended across the homeland as a whole. Today, the name of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) is recognized and resonates around the world. Through its struggle, ideology, and steadfast stance, the YPJ has succeeded in drawing global attention, and all of this has been built through its own efforts, dedication, and hard work.”
