The city of Kobani witnessed a large-scale demonstration today condemning the attacks and violations committed against civilians in the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh, and affirming the rights of residents and the people of both neighborhoods to live in peace and security.
Thousands of demonstrators, including local residents as well as members of civil and military institutions, took part in the march, chanting slogans denouncing the systematic violations against civilians and reaffirming solidarity with them. The demonstrators observed a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs before speeches were delivered, followed by an address by Suad Sheikh, a member of the Star Congress Coordination in Kobani, in which she stated:
“The gangs of the Turkish occupying state and the mercenaries of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham – the transitional government – claim to act in the name of religion, while they are now committing massacres against the people and spreading destruction throughout the region. We strongly condemn these barbaric practices against our people. We will not allow them to take a single inch of our land, and we pledge to our martyrs that we will continue on their path and avenge them, no matter the cost.”
This event comes as part of a series of widespread and ongoing local protests across the regions of North and East Syria, where voices continue to call for an end to violations, the protection of civilians, and the referral of those responsible to justice to be held accountable.
