Jacqueline Madrel: The Struggle of the Women’s Protection Units is a Struggle for Life

A delegation of French activists from the Danielle Mitterrand Foundation visited North and East Syria to learn more about the Rojava Revolution. After meeting with the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), Jacqueline Madrel, Vice President of the Danielle Mitterrand Foundation, spoke with our website and emphasized that their visit to Rojava was a great honor for them.

The Democratic Nation system, led by the Women’s Protection Units, has gained international recognition. Many journalists, activists, and delegations from various countries and organizations visit North and East Syria to learn about this system. Among these was a French delegation consisting of Jacqueline Madrel, Vice President of the Danielle Mitterrand Foundation, and her team. They also visited the Women’s Protection Units, where they were welcomed by Viyan Afrin, a commander in the YPJ; Roxan Mohammed, spokesperson for the YPJ; and Lana Hussein and Destina Halab, members of the YPJ Military Council. During the visit, many questions were asked about the YPJ, and detailed responses were provided by the women fighters.

“We are witnesses to the tragedy of this people”

Jacqueline Madrel, Vice President of the Danielle Mitterrand Foundation, described her visit to North and East Syria as a duty, stating:“The Kurdish people are fighting a harsh war, and we are witnesses to their tragedy. For this reason, we have organized many activities and events in support of Kurdistan. The global revolutionary Danielle Mitterrand took part in the Kurdish revolution alongside many conscientious individuals. Danielle Mitterrand and many other global revolutionaries played a fundamental role in informing the international community about the tragedy of the Kurdish people. This was made possible thanks to the Kurdish people’s struggle and the efforts of global revolutionaries. Therefore, my visit to Rojava was not only a genuine opportunity but also a duty to honor the memory of Danielle Mitterrand and her work, which paved the way for us.”

The Struggle of the Women’s Protection Units is a Struggle for Thought, Solidarity, and Justice

In her remarks, Jacqueline Madrel explained that the struggle of the YPJ and YPG is viewed differently in Europe, and continued:“Our visit to the Women’s Protection Units was extremely important. In France and Europe, we were presented with a romanticized, guerrilla-style image of the YPJ and YPG, but the reality is completely different. I saw their philosophy, and at the same time, their unique perspective on women, life, and nature. For me now, the struggle of the Women’s Protection Units is a struggle for life itself. It is also a struggle for thought, solidarity, and justice. The YPJ fighters are symbols and pioneers for women around the world.”

Jacqueline Madrel, Vice President of the Danielle Mitterrand Foundation, affirmed her commitment to introducing the Rojava Revolution to the world. She concluded by saying:

“This is not only a philosophy of life, but also revolutionary ideas. It was a great honor for us to visit Rojava. We have witnessed many associations and institutions, and we met talented, educated, and understanding people. This is a struggle worth living. We will encourage all politicians to visit Rojava, witness the struggle here, and draw inspiration from its revolution, so that we can introduce this great revolution to the world.”
